An infrastructure financier is back on the front row. Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) says it is returning as lead sponsor of Lagos Fashion Week 2026, a year after its first partnership with the event. The fashion week runs from Wednesday 28 October to Sunday 1 November, according to the organisers' dates as reported by The Rio Times.
What AFC is putting its name to
This year AFC is centring its sponsorship on money for a more sustainable, climate-resilient fashion industry. With AFC Capital Partners, it will host a session titled "Off the Runway: Financing a Sustainable African Fashion Industry in a Changing Climate", bringing together leaders from fashion, energy, sustainability and investment to discuss how infrastructure, new forms of financing and sturdier production systems could support Nigeria's fashion industry.
- AFC was set up in 2007 and has 49 member countries.
- It says it has invested more than $20bn in 36 African countries.
- Its 2025 Lagos Fashion Week partnership, its first, included a joint event with its investee ARISE Integrated Industrial Platforms that drew about 300 participants.
"Africa's creative industries embody both our cultural pride and our economic promise," said Samaila Zubairu, AFC's president and chief executive. Omoyemi Akerele, who founded Lagos Fashion Week in 2011, tied the partnership to the African Fashion Coalition Manifesto and its pillars on community-led creation, inclusive prosperity and circularity.
Why a financier sponsors a runway
For AFC, the sponsorship puts an institution most people never deal with in front of designers, buyers and the media, and links its infrastructure work, from industrial parks to power, to an industry people can see. For Lagos Fashion Week, a development financier as lead sponsor shifts the conversation from the runway to factories, cotton and funding.
