Vodacom's Cheap Summer Data Is Half Night Owl

Vodacom's new summer bundles look like a third of the usual price, but half of each one is Night Owl data that only works from midnight to 5am.

[ The short version ]

  1. 01Vodacom's "Let's Do Summer" deals run from R129 to R529 for 30 days, with unlimited Vodacom-to-Vodacom calls, YouTube data and a YouTube Premium trial.
  2. 02Half of each bundle is Night Owl data, usable only from midnight to 5am, according to TechCentral.
  3. 03Counting only anytime data, the top R529 deal costs R3.53 a GB, against R9.99 on Vodacom's standard 100GB bundle.

Vodacom has launched its summer promotion, and the headline numbers are big: up to 300GB for R529. Read the split, though, and the deal looks different. According to TechCentral, half of every "Let's Do Summer" bundle is Night Owl data, which Vodacom's terms restrict to between midnight and 5am.

What you get

Each deal lasts 30 days and includes unlimited Vodacom-to-Vodacom calls under a fair-usage policy, 5GB of YouTube data, 100 VodaBucks and a one-month YouTube Premium trial. Prices and anytime data, as calculated by TechCentral:

  • R129: 15GB in total, 7.5GB anytime, R17.20 per anytime GB.
  • R199: 30GB, 15GB anytime, R13.27 per GB.
  • R279: 60GB, 30GB anytime, R9.30 per GB.
  • R429: 150GB, 75GB anytime, R5.72 per GB.
  • R529: 300GB, 150GB anytime, R3.53 per GB.

The pricing play

Even on anytime data alone, the biggest deal is about a third of the standard per-GB rate. The smallest is not: at R17.20 per anytime GB, the R129 bundle is the dearest of the five. The cheaper the deal, the more the Night Owl half matters.

The structure is a familiar telecom move. Time-limited promotions let operators cut prices for a season without lowering their standard rates, TechCentral notes, and night data sells capacity the network has spare when most people are asleep. The split mirrors Vodacom's prepaid LTE router bundles, now with free on-net calls added.

Vodacom has not said how long the deals will be on sale, whether every prepaid customer qualifies, or what the fair-usage limit on calls is. The launch also lands while what South Africans pay to communicate is under scrutiny: the regulator, Icasa, announced an inquiry in September, then withdrew the notice on 1 October, saying it would republish it with a draft questionnaire.
