Black Friday in South Africa now starts in October. Takealot's Black November sale opens on 26 October and runs for the whole month up to Black Friday on 27 November, Hypertext reported on 22 October.
Instead of saving everything for one day, Takealot will release Black Friday deals week by week, adding new ones as the month goes on so shoppers can compare and research before they buy. Cyber Monday, traditionally the Monday after Black Friday, will be the final round, focused on electronics.
"Pinning a whole year of shopping on a single day is a lot of pressure for one day," Takealot said in its announcement.
What Takealot is telling shoppers
- Add products to a wishlist so Takealot can alert you when prices drop
- Turn on notifications and check deals daily rather than once a week
- Set a budget and buy only what you wanted, at a price you would have paid anyway
The Amazon factor
The timing is not only about shoppers. Amazon South Africa, Takealot's biggest competitor, has already started its own early Black Friday sale, according to Hypertext. When one big retailer opens early, the other has little choice but to follow, or watch customers spend their budgets elsewhere.
The lesson for smaller sellers
A month-long sale changes how merchants plan. Stock, ad budgets and delivery capacity have to last four weeks instead of one weekend, and weekly deal drops give shoppers a reason to come back rather than one big moment to compete for. For small brands selling on Takealot, Instagram or WhatsApp, the practical takeaway is to plan a run of offers through November, not a single Friday blast, and to start ads before the marketplaces soak up attention.
Takealot did not give sales targets or say how many deals it plans to run.
