[ The short version ]

  1. 01OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are rolling out in private preview to selected Google Cloud enterprise customers.
  2. 02Usage is bought through Google Cloud Marketplace and draws down existing cloud commitments, so companies need no separate OpenAI contract.
  3. 03Google says it is now the only big cloud selling Gemini, Claude and GPT models; Microsoft remains OpenAI's primary cloud partner.

OpenAI's newest models are now on sale inside Google's cloud. Google Cloud announced on 21 October that GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are rolling out in private preview to selected enterprise customers through its Model Garden, with more models coming. OpenAI plans general availability in the coming weeks, according to Tech Wire Asia.

Google says that makes it the only hyperscale cloud offering all three leading closed models, Gemini, Claude and GPT, alongside more than 200 others. OpenAI confirmed that Microsoft remains its primary cloud partner, Tech Wire Asia reports.

What customers get

  • GPT-6 Astra for demanding coding, computer use, professional and research work
  • GPT-6.1 Sol, which Google describes as near-Astra intelligence at lower cost
  • GPT-6 Luna, a fast, cheaper model for everyday work at scale
  • Codex workflows: developers can connect the Codex command-line and desktop tools to Google's platform

The commercial detail may matter more than the models. OpenAI usage is bought through Google Cloud Marketplace, appears on a single Google invoice, draws down existing cloud commitments and counts toward Flexible Savings Plans, Google says. Google did not publish per-token prices, and financial terms were not disclosed.

Google says prompts and outputs stay within the customer's data perimeter and are not used to train models. Zero data retention options and Confidential Compute are listed as coming soon. Box is the first customer named. OpenAI models are also due to reach Gemini for business and Google's Antigravity coding tool, with no dates given.

Why it matters

For companies in Africa that already run on Google Cloud, this removes a procurement step: an OpenAI model can now be tested on the same account and budget as the rest of their stack. It also shows how far OpenAI has moved from relying on one cloud. In June it let Oracle customers use their cloud commitments the same way, Tech Wire Asia notes.
