The price war between the two biggest AI labs has reached the coding tools businesses pay for most. OpenAI is offering large discounts to win enterprise customers from Anthropic, and some are moving, The Information reports, according to a summary by The Decoder.
Who moved
- Rippling: chief executive Parker Conrad says OpenAI now handles 52% of the company's coding work, up from 16%.
- Replit: switched after OpenAI offered more than 30% off a contract worth over $100m a year.
- DataCamp: chief executive Jonathan Cornelissen says OpenAI's pricing cut the company's costs by 80% to 90%.
- A US bank with more than $7bn in assets doubled its ChatGPT seats to 500 at no extra charge, paying under $7 a user instead of the usual $20 or more.
The 80% to 90% figure is one customer's own estimate of its total savings, not a published price cut. Neither company has confirmed the deal terms.
Margins for market share
The Decoder says OpenAI is partly buying market share at the expense of its margins, but is also cutting real prices through its Sol and Luna model lines. Both labs face pressure from Chinese models such as DeepSeek and Kimi, which offer comparable performance at a fraction of the cost.
