Vodafone Business in Egypt and Cassava Technologies have announced a partnership to launch Egypt's first national AI factory, a facility for running AI applications locally, according to the companies' release.
What an AI factory is
Strip away the branding and it is a data centre built for AI: racks of powerful graphics processors that organisations rent by the hour or month, instead of buying their own. The companies call it GPU-as-a-Service. The computing uses NVIDIA hardware through Cassava, which describes itself as the first NVIDIA cloud partner in Africa.
The selling point is location. The data is hosted and processed in Egypt and meets local rules, which matters to government bodies, banks and other regulated businesses that cannot send sensitive data abroad.
Who it is for
The release names government entities, key industries and consumers as users, plus organisations that want to build and run AI applications at scale. The partnership also includes NVIDIA training and support programmes. The companies did not disclose the facility's capacity or the cost of the project itself.
"For Cassava, contributing to building Egypt's AI ecosystem is an act of empowerment, not just a technological milestone," said Ahmed El Beheiry, Cassava's group chief technology and AI officer.
