[ The short version ]

  1. 01From 5 November, DStv Nigeria will sell four packages: Starter at ₦6,000, Select at ₦11,000, Sports at ₦21,000 and Premium at ₦44,500 a month.
  2. 02Sports carries every Premier League and Champions League match; Compact subscribers move to it and Compact Plus subscribers move to Premium automatically.
  3. 03The reset follows the loss of 1.4 million Nigerian subscribers in two years; the test is whether cheaper football wins back more viewers than it loses in downgrades.

MultiChoice Nigeria, now a Canal+ company, will replace its six DStv packages with four on 5 November. Chief executive Kemi Omotosho announced the change at a media briefing at the company's Victoria Island headquarters in Lagos on 27 October, ThisDay and Premium Times report. "We haven't launched new products in a long time," she said. GOtv also moves to four packages: Easy, Starter, Select and Sports.

The four packages

  • Starter, ₦6,000 a month: adds SuperSport KICKOFF and Africa Magic+, with the Premier League Match of the Week and selected Champions League games.
  • Select, ₦11,000: films, Nigerian and international series, children's channels and some football, aimed at families.
  • Sports, ₦21,000: every Premier League and Champions League match, the Europa League, WWE, UFC and ESPN (including the NBA), plus all of Select's entertainment channels.
  • Premium, ₦44,500: everything in Sports, plus Formula 1, MotoGP, Grand Slam tennis, major golf and first-run M-Net series.

The new prices sit on the old price points. Until now DStv sold Padi at ₦4,400, Yanga at ₦6,000, Confam at ₦11,000, Compact at ₦19,000, Compact Plus at ₦30,000 and Premium at ₦44,500, according to Naija Tech Guide's price list, checked against DStv's site in July. The cheapest DStv package now starts at ₦6,000, and the change is in what each tier carries: full Premier League and Champions League coverage now starts at ₦21,000, below the roughly ₦30,000 top-end price that executives cited at the briefing, as QED reports.

What happens to current subscribers

Subscribers move automatically on 5 November. Compact moves to Sports and Compact Plus moves to Premium, Premium Times reports, and MultiChoice says the move itself carries no extra cost. "You will not get less than what you paid for," Omotosho said. Onyinye Ezenwa, vice-president of customer value management, said subscribers who prepaid for several months keep their full prepaid period, Blueprint reports. Subscribers should check the price shown on their next renewal after 5 November.

There are two other changes. DStv Stream, the app-only service, is sold on its own from ₦6,000 a month with no dish or decoder, and new customers can get a dish, decoder and one month of an entry-level package for ₦15,000.

Why Canal+ is doing this

MultiChoice Nigeria lost 1.4 million subscribers between March 2023 and March 2025, and its Nigerian subscription revenue fell 44% to $197.74 million in the year to March 2025, BusinessDay reports. Canal+ took control of MultiChoice in September 2025 and has since run the same four-package reset across the continent, including in Kenya, while DStv's revenue keeps falling in South Africa.

Football is the bet. Streaming services are far cheaper for films and series: Netflix's standard plan costs ₦6,500 and Prime Video ₦2,300 a month in Nigeria, according to BusinessDay. But neither carries the Premier League. BusinessDay's own sums show the risk: if 10,000 Premium subscribers dropped to Sports, DStv would lose ₦240 million a month and need about 11,400 new Sports subscribers to make it back. MultiChoice has not said how many new customers it expects.
