Anthropic, the company behind Claude, has set up a fund to give away part of its future wealth. It announced on 18 October that it will commit 5% of its shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, subject to approval by its stockholders.

How the fund works

The board may add 2% more for every 50% increase in the company's value above a set baseline, which Anthropic has not published. The fund is a wholly owned company, not a registered charity, and its Anthropic shares cannot be used for lobbying or political giving, in the US or abroad.

Anthropic says the fund gives it room to do things it cannot do in-house, such as large donations to existing nonprofits or direct payments to specific groups of people. It gives the effects of AI on jobs as an example. Its safety research, biomedical work and discounts on Claude for nonprofits stay inside the company. More detail on how the fund will be run is due in the coming months.

The announcement came two days after Anthropic published a study showing junior roles fell from 27% to 9% of its technical hires.
