Absa has picked one of Africa's most recognisable athletes to carry its brand. The bank launched a new South African campaign on 21 October built around the promise "When that moment comes, you have us", and named Eliud Kipchoge its Official World Tour Financial Partner, according to a release issued by OnPoint PR on Bizcommunity.

A new TV commercial featuring Kipchoge debuted the same day across all of Absa's markets and on social media. The campaign borrows his line "No human is limited" and focuses on the people and moments behind success rather than on the bank itself.

What the partnership covers

Kipchoge plans to run seven marathons on seven continents. Absa says the partnership will bring customer experiences, leadership conversations, digital storytelling, wellness initiatives and community programmes across its pan-African footprint.

The products behind the story

  • Absa Transact Account: R7.50 a month, unlimited taps, free till-point cash withdrawals and life cover
  • Ultimate Banking: added protection, credit facilities and a digital fraud warranty
  • Absa Rewards: eligible customers can get up to R25,000 cashback on a first Absa home loan

"We recognise that every financial decision is connected to a deeply personal moment," said Candice Thurston, Absa's chief marketing and corporate affairs officer for personal and private banking. Kipchoge said: "Success is never achieved alone."

Why it works on paper

Choosing a Kenyan athlete for a South African campaign is part of the point: Kipchoge is known across Absa's markets in a way a local celebrity may not be. Pairing an emotional film with a cheap, specific account gives the campaign something to sell beyond a feeling. Whether it moves customers will show in account openings, which Absa has not set targets for publicly.
